Hey everybody!
This post will be about my favourite character of all the chapters we´ve read so far.
I´ll explain to you, why my fav is my fav and give you
some specific actions of this person.
Honestly, it was really difficult for me to find a
character whom I like. I feel like Sam is kind of stupid and I don´t like him
that much although his sayings are partial pretty funny. Alicia is also not my
favourite because I often can´t understand why she acts like that.
That´s why I think my favourite character is Sam´s mum.
She seems very cool, still young in her thinking and
nice to me. I can understand why she acts the way she does and she seems to be
really likeable.
She hasn´t had an easy life, but I think she manages
everything quite well. This is shown with
“(…) that´s because she messed up school by having me.” (page 19, line 32)

She seems to be a very caring and lovely mum. Her son
means everything to her and she supports Sam in every situation.
We don´t know that many facts about her but we know that her name is Annie Jones (page 143). She is 32 years old and had her son Sam with 16 years. She is divorced, has a new boyfriend, Mark, now and works for the council. We also know that Annie is good looking.

I like the way she treats Sam because I think it is
pretty difficult for her to talk to him seriously. He often just answers “I dunno” or doesn´t give useful answers
but she tries it again and again. (That might sound strange because this is
kinda expected because she´s his mum but I think it is a good accomplishment).
A good example here is the situation when Annie wants Sam to spend more time with her and not with Alicia (page 48-50). I think when she tries to talk to Sam about having sex (page 54-55) shows here way of making serious conversation with Sam too.

She acts as the main maternal and parental figure in
Sam´s life and is for sure pretty important for his development. In contrast to
Sam´s dad, who is less involved as a parental figure, his mum is always there
for him. After Sam comes back from Hastings, they talk and she forgives him but
she´s consequent in the family counselor thing and wants real reasons for running
away. (page 118-120)
I really appreciate that she´s frequently handing out advice to Sam. Annie helps him in every situation and she wants only the best for her
son. She asks Sam about living with Alicia at Alicia´s and she tries to protect
him from this fault. “You´re a kid.
You´ve got your whole life in front of you. (…) I´m not saying you can get out
of it. (…) I´m saying, you know, go there every day. Look after your kid. Be a
father to him. Just … don´t live in Alicia´s bedroom.”
(page 167)
(page 167)
I like about Annie that she is pretty relaxed and
sometimes funny. “If I had another baby,
then he or she would be younger than yours. My child would be younger than my
grandchild.” (page 158, line 27-29)
It is really lovely, that she is also emotional, for
example when she starts crying about Alicia´s pregnancy. “She stood there crying for a little while (…)” (page 143, line 27)

I honestly like most of Annie´s actions so I can´t
really tell which ones make her my favourite character. I think I´ve already
used most of my favourite quotations in the beginning of this blog entry, but
here are three more:
When Sam comes back from Hastings and Annie sees him
for the first time again.
“She looked at me, and then looked around for something to throw at me, and she found the remote control. She didn´t hit me with it (…) ´You stupid, stupid boy´, she said.” (page 115, line 25-32)
“She looked at me, and then looked around for something to throw at me, and she found the remote control. She didn´t hit me with it (…) ´You stupid, stupid boy´, she said.” (page 115, line 25-32)
When Sam and his mum talk about Sam moving into
Alicia´s bedroom.
“Has she seen your bedroom? You can´t hardly live with yourself, let alone someone else. You going to throw your dirty underwear all over her floor? Have you thought about all of that?” (page 168, line 4-7)
She is super realistic and tells his son straight away about his manners and that he definitely has to change them. I like that and it´s actually pretty funny.

The age-comparing-thing:
“She´s three years older than David Beckham, a year older than Robbie Williams, four years younger than Jennifer Aniston. She knows all the dates. If you want, she can supply a much longer list. (…) She only knows about people round about her age who look good.” (page 16, line 2-9)
Annie seems to be into celebrities and this comparing is quite astonishing.

I hope that I convince you too with my arguments that Annie is indisputable the best character in this novel :)
What I also want to share with you, is this video:
I found it in YouTube and it is about a girl who got pregnant when she was 16. She talks about how her family reacted to the pregnancy and especially about how her parents found out and I think that her mum reacts in pretty similar way as Annie.
I liked watching it because it was really interesting - but have a look yourself!

Dear Melanie,
