the second nightmare - chapter 10° to 12°

Hey everyone!

This is going to be about chapter 10, 11 and 12. I´ll explain to you, why chapter 12 is a repetition of another chapter in this book.

First of all, here is a short summary of what happens in those 3 chapters:
Sam tells us that people in school find out about the pregnancy, he and Alicia go for a scan to the hospital and they meet more often now. They try the National Childbirth Trust classes but people in there are too old for them and Sam´s mum asks him about Mark moving into their house.
Alicia wants to live together with Sam and the baby in her room, but her parents advice them not to and Sam´s mum also doesn´t want Sam to move out. Sam goes out skating again and talks to Rubbish about his life. He also talks to TH again.
He gets whizzed into the future again and meets his little sister Emily and his 2-years-old son Roof. Sam should go for an inoculation with him, but it doesn´t work and so they go to the park, Sam buys him a helicopter toy and pays for cinema tickets instead. The future seems kind of bad for Sam in his father role again.

We´re already through most of the book, which is sad, because I really like reading it. Lots of things happened and I´m still wondering about Alicia getting a baby and Sam becoming a father.

I noticed that the whole chapter 12 is a repetition of chapter 6. Sam is in the future for a second time and he lives his “new” life. But this time, it is not so much a nightmare but still a pretty realistic dream. Okay wait…in the beginning, Sam is doing alright but it is kind of a nightmare (I would guess for every mum and dad) for him at the end.

Because of Alicia´s cold, Sam has to look after Roof and take him to the health center. His first mistake is basically to mention that he wants to go to the playground and to the swings with Roof. Something pretty bad must have happened there because Roof starts crying. On the way to the health center everything is alright. But when Sam wants to register Roof for the inoculation, the nightmare starts. It is so awkward and embarrassing! (I was feeling shame for Sam´s behalf) Sam doesn´t know the “real” name behind Roof and he also doesn´t know the last name of his son. The woman behind the desk asks really critical questions. The whole situation must be strange for her too. Fortunately, Sam decides to give up and come back another day.
Afterwards Sam and Roof go to the playground. They play for a while and Roof gets his ice cream then. When they go for a walk, Roof sees this helicopter toy and wants to have it. (What else would a kid say?) Sam is not experienced enough to handle the screaming kid lying on the ground and so he buys the toy.
When they pass the cinema, Roof wants to see a special movie and Sam is like “Oh why not? I can kill a couple of hours in here”. They go to see the movie but guess what happened. Roof doesn´t like the movie, starts screaming and Sam has to take him outside.
After that Sam takes Roof back to Alicia´s and leaves them.
It must have been a really horrible experience with Roof. Again. I could understand Sam if he was upset about the future.

I´m looking forward to see if Sam does things different in realitiy or if he just acts like that for a second time.

My favourite quotation in chapter 11 is one of Sam´s sayings: “I´d had the perfect life, and I hadn´t realized it, and now it was over.” (page 166, line 4) It is the real case. That´s everything I need to say about what is happening to Sam.

I hope you liked reading this extra blog entry!

Love, Melanie
