the on-going love story - chapter 3° and 4°

My friends,

in this post I´m going to explain you, why Sam´s mum is scared of Alicia.

I´m in a reading flow…
We read the third chapter in school and I read chapter 4 at home…  I´m getting more and more into the story.

By now, Sam is totally in love with Alicia. He can´t concentrate on anything else anymore, he spends his whole time with Alicia and they´re really close. Everything seems to be perfect by now. "I dreamed my way through school for the next few weeks. I dreamed my way through life, really. It was all just waiting." (page 47, line 1) – a quotation of Sam at the beginning of the chapter, which describes the whole situation perfectly.

that´s how I imagine them to be like...

Sam´s mum already started worrying about her son, because she thinks that too much time with Alicia is unhealthy. (page 49)
That really reminded me of my own parents…they´re pretty much like Sam´s mum in that case.

After kind of a first argument, Sam goes out with his mum to grab a pizza and to go to the cinema, but there they argued again.

It´s also mentioned that Sam´s mum meets a guy at the pizza place. (I first didn´t get why Hornby mentions that here but in the next chapter it came up too)

In the whole chapter, Sam is always in that “missing-Alicia-every-minute-of-the-day” – mode. He says that the time without her is a torture and everything besides meeting her is just waiting until he can see her again. That´s sad, isn´t it?

I can understand Sam´s mum´s worries about his son. He focuses on Alicia only. 24/7. That will obviously end badly. It´s that typical behavior teenagers in love show at first and I can really identify with that.
Another important thing is that Sam´s mum tries to talk to Sam seriously. It´s the kind of THAT CONVERSATION no teenager wants to have. I can totally understand Sam here.

But she also says that she wants to meet Alicia, because then, she wouldn´t be so scared of her anymore. (I´m still thinking about why they didn´t meet before and why his mum is scared of her… That´s weird) Finally Alicia comes over for dinner one evening.

Guess what the task is, I have chosen. It´s just exactly what I thought about before. Why is Sam´s mother scared of Alicia?
I´m not sure at all, because there can be a lot of different answers but here are my possible ones:
- Sam´s mum didn´t expect Sam and Alicia to come together so fast. She expected things to go in a different way. That´s like what Sam also mentioned here:
"My mum was worried about things changing, her being left on her own, me becoming a part of someone else's life and someone else's family, me growing up and not being  her little boy any more, me becoming someone else..." (page 56, line 24-28) - she doesn´t really know Alicia by now. Maybe Alica has a bad influence on Sam or she´ll steal his time
- she wonders how Alicia acted after Sam came back to her (his mum) to get him back to herself
- she can´t imagine what a girl has to be like that Sam spends all of his time with her. He even nearly stops skating because of her.
"It gets in the way of things. (...) Friends. Schoolwork. Family. Skating ... Everything. Life." (page 50, line 5-7)
- she wonders what Alicia wants from Sam
- she doesn´t want Sam to be heartbroken, lonly or really sad when they´ll break up one day

Guess what Sam also mentiones in this chapter. “the thing that´s supposed to happen finally happened” (page 57). He got Alicia pregnant – I´m like really? And then (I still can´t believe that) he says “Not so bad, right? It´s a mistake, that´s all” (page 58) I´m just like are you kidding me?
Tell me what you think about that scene please… It´s driving me nuts.

The fourth chapter is basically about what happened to Alicia´s and Sam´s relationship. While Alicia´s family lunch, her parents get on his nerves and it seems like they don´t like him that much.
Sam is bored with Alicia and he thinks about how his life changed with her. He even says “I think we´re breaking up” (page 68, line 12) but he didn´t talk to Alicia about that yet.
It´s also mentioned that Mark (the bloke from Pizza Express) is again with Sam´s mum and the two of them talk with Sam about skating, about Mark´s son and also about Alicia.
